Today is Always the Beginning

This is the first day of the rest of your life.

The melody plays in my mind all day, as I wash dishes, wipe cherry juice of a tiny chin, and wonder what I’m going to do with all that zucchini.

Day after day, week after week, life blends together and it can pass me by.

Those lofty goals I have for myself, that 30 before 30 list seems unattainable. The extra pounds I want to shed, the books I want to read, the projects I want to launch… so much to do and so little time. And then there’s the question of what is God’s will in all this? What if what I want to do isn’t what He wants me to do? It’s paralyzing, really.

As Kevin DeYoung says:

I’ve known impetuous Christians, but in my personal experience I’ve seen more who are paralyzed by indecision and inactivity. They refuse to make a decision without all the facts and an almost complete assurance that everything will turn out fine. […] Obsessing over the future is not how God wants us to live, because showing us the future is not God’s way. His way is to speak to us in the Scriptures and transform us by the renewing of our minds. […] We should start looking to God–His character and His promises–and thereby have confidence to take risks for His name’s sake. ~Just Do Something

As I read the words on the page, I knew he was speaking to me. I’ve been putting off projects that have been burning in my hearts because I’ve been waiting for writing in the sky to confirm it’s what God wants for me.

begin

But then I remember:

He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.
~Philippians 1:6

Did you catch that? God will complete it. He began it, and He will finish it. I just need to be faithful and act in obedience.

I can’t help what went undone yesterday, and I can’t control what will happen tomorrow. But I do have today. I can either fret about all that’s on my plate or I can begin.

Dig in. Press forward. One foot in front of the other will take you and me on the journey of our lives, and as we go, the Holy Spirit will direct us.

Today is a fresh start, a new beginning, a chance to set a new trajectory for your life. What have you been putting off? What have you been waiting to start until “the right time” comes along?

The beginning is always today. Begin.

Want to know what I’ve decided to begin today? It’s a crazy-bold move in obedience called #OTAVEDA. You can learn more about it and join the challenge here. I’d love to have you tell your story of God’s faithfulness with me.
