I stared at her, incredulous.
She was lying to my face.
Here was my cherub of a child, telling me a bold-faced lie without so much as squirming.
And the worst part? I saw myself in her.
Not only does my three-year-old Carissa look like my mini-me, apparently she also struggles with some of the same besetting sins as I did.
You see, as a young child, I was a terrible liar. My parents tell me I’d lie so convincingly that I’d make them question whether they knew the truth themselves.
So my life has come full circle. Ever heard your parents say, “I hope you have kids just like you when you grow up!”? Yeah… me neither. đ
But seriously, it took years of correction on my parents’ part to teach me the importance of telling the truth and living a life of integrity. But their patient parenting paid off.
Now do I still struggle with telling lies? While I might be tempted to, I know better now. I’ve grown in my walk with God, and I’m learning new things now that build on the foundation of my early years with the Lord.
Isn’t that what every parent hopes to see in their child–a steady growth toward physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual maturity? I know that’s what my parents prayed for me, and it’s what I pray for my daughters.
That’s also what our heavenly Father wants for us, too–to grow in spiritual maturity year over year, growing in knowledge, in love, and in depth of insight. (Philippians 1:9)
So why do so many of us struggle with the same doubts and sins year after year? I think it’s because we don’t have a clear understanding of where we are in our journey or how to take the next step.
We need to start with an honest assessment, recognizing where we are in our spiritual journey so that we know exactly what steps to take next.
I might not know your favorite color or hot drink, but I do know one thing about you: you passionately love Jesus and want to grow deeper with Him, but life tends to get in the way.

I’ve heard from thousands of women who have emailed me saying that they want to grow deeper with Jesus, they just don’t know how (and they don’t have time to do ALL THE THINGS).
So I created the Spiritual Growth Assessment, a free tool that gives you a clear picture of where you are in your spiritual growth journey and whatâs your next step.
Itâs a simple assessment that takes only 4 minutes, and gives you a clear picture of where you are in your spiritual growth journey and whatâs your next step.
And if you’re ready to take the next step toward spiritual growth, I’d love for you to join us in myOneThingAlone: it’s a community of women who love Jesus and want to cheer you on as you grow closer to Him.
May you find much joy–in telling the truth and in Jesus today. đ
