What’s your favorite Bible verse?
I had to think long and hard about this one, because as verses flooded my mind, each carried different memories, seasons of life when that verse spoke truth to me, upheld me, or revealed a new aspect of God in my life. Does that happen to you too?
But I keep coming back to one verse that has been the overture throughout all these years, a single verse that has become my life motto:
One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.
Psalm 27:4
If you could ask God for one thing, what would it be? For David, it was the privilege of living every day in the presence of God. Simple, but life-changing.
I’ve shared with you my journey this last year of going from lukewarm faith to real intimacy with God, and central to that journey has been this one prayer:
Let me dwell in your presence, gazing at You in worship. Everything else will flow from that.
So much of my prayer life has been spent on asking for things for myself and those around me. But I’ve discovered these last few months, as David did, that as I spend time at His feet, in His presence, everything else has a way of working itself out. He becomes my First Love. His Spirit whispers behind me when I should turn to the right or to the left. He turns my darkness into light.
All from learning to dwell with Him.
One thing alone… that makes all the difference. Let David’s prayer becomes ours today and every day.
