I look through the odd collection of bottles in the refrigerator door. Ranch dressing. Worcestershire sauce. Maple syrup. That bottle of horseradish no one’s touched in ages.
I take each one out at look at it, turning around the bottle until I see it: small, written in neat black ink, the expiration date.
That date, that unique combination of numbers and letters says volumes about the contents of the bottle. It determines what I keep and what I throw out. But really, it does not good to be there on the label if I don’t read it. Expiration dates are only as we allow them to be.
And I wonder if there aren’t expiration dates on some of the thoughts and attitudes in my life.
Lies like “If I don’t eat that I’m depriving myself of a good thing” and “I deserve a second donut!” and “What’s the use? I’m never going to change!” are all thoughts that have reached their expiration date and need to be chucked out.
In their place, I’m stowing away Truth like
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.
1 Corinthians 6:12
To Him who is able to keep you from falling and present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy– to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.
You have circled this mountain long enough; now turn north.
In fact, I’ve written a long list of Bible verses to help us overcome food cravings. But making a list and actually internalizing Truths are two different feats.
If I’m not careful, I hang on to destructive thoughts for far too long. Maybe you do, too.
Make time today to examine your thoughts in light of Truth. Chuck the expired, and hold on to the Truth.
