I recently got the chance to hang out with Michelle DeRusha, author of the newly-released 50 Women Every Christian Should Know: Learning from Heroines of the Faith* and talk about the power of story.
I knew from previous experience that our conversation would be rich with meaning so we recorded it for you to watch along.
It’s a short 20-minute video, but it packs a punch. Here are just a few of my favorite quotes from our conversation:
God receives glory when we can celebrate the lives of women that look different from us.
Some women impacted thousands of people and some impacted a handful. But each of their stories is worthy and valuable in and of itself. It doesn’t matter how broad their reach was but how they were using the gifts God gave them to impact the people in their lives and further His kingdom on earth right where they were.
These stories [50 Women] show that there is such a broad spectrum of living out God’s will and plan–within the home, outside the home.
You guys–this book is so SO good! You all know I love a good story anyway, but imagine a book containing the stories of 50 women spanning almost 1,000 years, no two women alike. And what I love about Michelle’s storytelling is that she tells it all: the good, the bad, the ugly, and the redemptive.
This isn’t a book that will make you feel guilty for not being spiritual enough. It’s not a book that adds to your already lengthy list of what you need to do to be spiritual (tear up that list already!). This is a book that thrills the heart with hope that God uses all kinds of women in endless ways to bring His kingdom on earth.
And for all the busy moms out there who hardly have time to pull your hair back in a ponytail let alone read a 300-page book, take heart: these 3-4 page stories are just the shot of inspiration you need to get up the next day and start all over again. Who says you need to finish the book in a month? Take all year if you need to–it might even be better that way.

But until then, I’d love to know: who is a heroine in the faith that you look up to? Let me know in the comments below.
P.S. Early in the video, I reference technical issues that we had had. In fact, before hitting record on this conversation, Michelle and I had another 20-minute conversation about writing stories, our favorite women in the book, and how 50 Women came to be. You can watch that bonus video here.
